- back: Original part of Inn was built in 1672 - enlarged with lumber which British used in local operations during Revolutionary War. James Fenimore Cooper wrote SEA LIONS while at the Inn. Walt Whitman sought the restful atmosphere of the Inn while compiling LEAVES OF GRASS. It was a favorite resort of many statesmen, including Daniel Webster and Grover Cleveland
