Region set apart as a public pleasure ground by an act of Congress in 1872. It is famous for its scenery. The park lies mainly in Wyoming and partly in Montana and Idaho, and contains about 3500 mi.². It is a plateau and mountain region from 7,000 to 11,000 feet above sea level and noted for its extraordinarily geysers, canyons, boiling Springs, etc. It was explored by an expedition under Washburn in 1870, and more fully buy one under Hayden in 1871
