this postcard was mailed from Fairmont, WV in 1908 with a flag killer with a #1 in it.  Note reads:  I just get in Fairmont and I will send you one view of the Monongah Disaster.  I guess you did read about it.  Will try to write you a letter as soon as I get in Clarksburg.

addressed to Miss N G? Higgins

There is a small piece missing to the lower left area

Real Photo Postcard shows men and ladies mulling around some wrecked pieces of equipment after the mining explosion disaster.  There is a line of people at the top of the hill going towards a large sign that says FAIRMONT COAL CO MONONGAH MINE NO 8.

This was the deadliest coal mine disaster in the US.  The Monongah Mining disaster occurred Dec 6th, 1907 and has been described as the WORST MINING DISASTER IN AMERICAN HISTORY.  The explosion occurred in Fairmont Coal Cos #6 and #8 mines.  Officially there were 367 men in the 2 mines.  At 10:28 an explosion occurred that killed most of the men inside the mine instantly.  My research found that there were 250 widows left and more than 1,000 children left fatherless.  In 1964 it was estimated that Lost of Life was upwards of 500.  Most victims were Italian Immigrants.  4 that escaped died of injuries.  # 8 was renamed no 63.  In 1961 - No 8 (63) closed with old No 6 being retired many years before.
