back:  was born in Litchfield, Conn June 14th, 1812, and died in Hartford on July 1st, 1896.  She was the daughter of Rev Lyman Beecher and sister of Henry Ward Beecher, and married Prof Calvin E Stowe January 6th, 1836.  Her literary fame dates from 1852, with the publication of UNCLE TOMS CABIN - a direct attack on slavery - which first appeared in serial form in  THE NATIONAL ERA
